The GYROKINESIS® Method was developed by Juliu Horwath and originally called “Yoga for Dancers”. In the “modern world of yoga”, many yoga teachers and movement professionals are now talking about the connection of fascia, the nervous system and fluid and three dimensional movement in addition to static held postures. GYROKINESIS® exercise addresses the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion and creating functional strength through rhythmic, flowing movement sequences. It is an original and unique method, which coordinates movement, breath and mental focus
GYROKINESIS® method classes can be adapted to fit anyone's ability. People from all walks of life including accomplished athletes, fitness enthusiasts, senior citizens and people recovering from an injury or dealing with a disability, take GYROKINESIS® method classes. By the end of a GYROKINESIS® method session, one's entire system is awakened and brought into greater balance. It focuses on the breath and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, resulting in a sense of calm, wellbeing and mental clarity.
In the GYROKINESIS® exercise class introduction we will start in a seated position on stools. The class format is a circle, with the teacher part of this circle, moving together with the students and cueing with voice, body and rhythmical breathing. We will begin with a sequence called “awakening of the senses”. Here students apply their own hands-on technique of self-massage over the entire body, awakening the inner energy so that the body is ready to move onto the movement sequences. Then follows a seated sequence on the stool, which starts with the awareness of “narrowing”, which is a term for integrating the deep core and uprightness of the spine. We move onto gentle “spinal motions”, which includes all the directions of movement that our spine is capable of. This is combined with various arm variations, enhanced by rhythmical breathing patterns that will help increase range of motion strength and cardiovascular conditioning. These movements will be tailored to suit each person’s range of energy and movement.
The second half of the class will be experienced on the floor. You will be guided through flowing movement, which teaches you the most practical way of using your body and how to find the connection through the body’s centre and out through the limbs. The floor sequence is a unique format of exercises that will open energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion and creating functional strength through rhythmic, flowing, easeful movement. Suzanne’s presentation will demonstrate how GYROKINESIS® exercise is a movement method that can enhance a modern yoga practice.
