Yoga Now in the Modern World

Although our yoga is thousands of years old, it has undergone somewhat of an explosive rejuvenation and transformation in the last 5 decades.  How has the deep dive into yoga in the West during this time changed things?  How did this happen?   How is yoga and yoga therapy now being personally and professionally practiced in our world and what is the potential upside and downside of that for us as practitioners and professionals in our new world of yoga.  Michael Lee has been there all the way.  In the early 1980’s he followed his passion to dive deeply into yoga himself.  He travelled to the USA where many of the gurus from India had relocated.  He lived in an ashram while he wrote a graduate thesis on the transformational effects of yoga on a modern lifestyle.  He then found founded Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy and has seen his work and the world of yoga take some amazing leaps and go from being something “weird” to something wonderful and being embraced widely by mainstream health providers and healers.  How did this happen and where to from here?

Michael grew up in Queensland and held teaching posts there, in PNG, and in SA before leaving for the USA in 1984 to pursue his yoga quest. He wanted to learn about the effectiveness of yoga for changing lives and so immersed himself at the Kripalu Center (then an ashram) in Massachusetts for two years. This began a career in yoga and yoga therapy with a focus on mental and emotional health and spanning 33 years. Michael founded Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy in 1986 based on his learning and integration of yoga and elements of contemporary psychology. PRYT now has training programs in several cities in the USA, in Canada, and in Japan and has over 2000 graduates. Michael and his wife Lori parent five adult children live in rural Massachusetts.
